Background
The 40ft container
On 26 April 1956 the Ideal X left Newark with 58 containers for Houston, usually described as the first container freighter. The first container on German soil was unloaded in Bremen on 6 May 1966.
ISO standards then fixed the dimensions: lengths including 20 and 40 feet, a width of 8 feet and heights of 8 or 8.5 feet. Today 20 and 40 foot containers dominate worldwide.
At 1:87 a 40 foot container of 12.19 m is about 140 mm long. Our model is a generic interpretation with closed double doors, not a specific manufacturer’s container.
