Background

Concrete on the move

Concrete is a dense, heavy cargo, which is why these blocks sit firmly strapped down on the Base.

Modern prestressed concrete goes back to the French engineer Eugène Freyssinet (1879–1962). After 1928 he concentrated on it, and after he invented a practical tensioning tool in 1938, its use spread worldwide.

L003 shows the concrete blocks covered, L004 uncovered.
